Good people rarely see the trap until it closes.
Honesty, trust, and empathy make life richer, but they also leave us exposed. When cruelty enters the room, the people who believe in decency are the ones who hesitate to strike back. They still hope reason will work. That hesitation is their virtue--and their danger.
The same openness that lets light in can also let darkness walk through the door. Manipulators learn this instinctively. They sense who will give the benefit of the doubt, who will forgive, who will still care after being hurt. They call it weakness. It isn’t weakness; it’s civilization itself.
But civilization has a cost. It asks us to stay kind in a world that profits from cruelty. It asks us to keep trusting even when betrayed. And sometimes, that exhaustion drives the kind to copy the unkind, mistaking armor for strength.
We can’t protect goodness by abandoning it. The task is harder: to guard the gentle without hardening the heart, to stay open without being blind. That balance--empathy with boundaries--is how light survives among wolves.
