The Measure of Civilization

One of the clearest signs that a society is becoming more civilized is how it treats people who are different.

For a time, we were learning: people of every race, faith, and orientation were beginning to be seen as neighbors instead of enemies. It wasn’t perfection, but it was progress.

Now the same leaders who once spoke of freedom use power to narrow it. They call tolerance “sin” and cruelty “virtue.” When difference becomes a target--whether it’s sexuality, identity, or the simple fact of being from somewhere else--it’s not morality driving them. It’s tribal fear disguised as faith.

Sexuality has always been more than biology or doctrine. It’s a test of empathy: can we accept that some people’s hearts simply move differently from our own?

The same test appears with immigrants, the poor, the stranger at the gate. Civilization passes that test when it chooses welcome over suspicion.

The pattern is ancient. Barbarism begins with exclusion and always justifies itself with righteousness.

Civilization begins with recognition--the moment we look at another person and see ourselves.
