The Curve of Civilization

For a long time, I avoided Facebook.

It was too painful to watch people I care about participate in what feels like the unraveling of our civilization.

Even now, I rarely browse casually, because it still hurts to see it happening in real time.

But I realized something important.

I cannot stand by and do nothing.

It often feels as though the tools I have -- intelligence, facts, and truth -- carry very little weight in this moment. Yet they are the tools I have, and with them comes a responsibility to speak.

The truth is, my natural tendency toward optimism is being tested like never before. It is very difficult right now to hold on to my belief in humanity.

So this is my attempt.
This is a series of essays meant to make the people I care about stop and think. About what they're doing. About what we're all doing. About the kind of world we're leaving behind.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me. But I do hope that, for even a few people, these words spark reflection. Because silence, I've decided, is not an option.
