Lessons from History

The Curve of Civilization

History has a way of showing us what works -- and what does not.

Every time a leader or a government places itself above the law, the story ends the same way.

Corruption spreads. Cruelty becomes policy. The society unravels.

We have seen versions of this story for thousands of years.

Even scripture records it.

In Numbers 31, leaders claimed God told them to slaughter women and children, sparing only the virgins for themselves.

That was not God's justice.

It was power using God's name to excuse cruelty.

And every time power works that way -- whether in ancient times or now -- the ending is the same.

It never starts with everyone losing their freedom at once.

It starts with certain people being targeted, certain rules being bent "just this once," certain values being treated as optional.

And slowly, the protections that once applied to everyone begin to disappear.

What is easy to forget is that these collapses rarely spare the people who cheered them on.

The same leaders who claim they are "fighting for you" have no problem turning on their supporters when it suits them.

A civilized society depends on laws that apply to everyone -- leaders and citizens alike.

Once we give that up, we are gambling with our own future, no matter how safe we think we are right now.
