The Pull Toward Barbarism

I've often wondered why people choose paths that are clearly harmful - not just to others, but to themselves.

Sometimes it feels like there's a force at work, pulling humanity back toward cruelty, fear, and tribalism. Call it psychology, call it an emergent property, some might even call it evil. Whatever the name, it's real.

After writing about the Curve of Civilization, I began reflecting on this darker current - the pull that drags humanity away from kindness and justice. These essays explore that force from different angles: existential, psychological, and historical. This series explores a darker current that runs beneath civilization: the pull toward fear, cruelty, and tribalism. Civilization is never guaranteed. We either resist that pull, or we get dragged by it.
